Hope, John (15 July 1765 - c.15 August 1836)

Kinsman of General Sir John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun.

Cadet Scotch Brigade* 1778, Ensign Scotch Brigade* 1779, Captain Scotch Brigade* 1782, Half-pay, Captain 60th Foot 1787, Half-pay 1787-1788, Captain 13th Light Dragoons 1788, Major 28th Light Dragoons+ 1795, Lieutenant Colonel 28th Light Dragoons+ 1796, Lieutenant Colonel 37th Foot 1799, Lieutenant Colonel 60th Foot 1804, Brevet Colonel 1805, Brigadier General on the Staff 1808-1810,  Major General 1810,  Lieutenant General 1819.

* in Dutch Service. + disbanded 1802.

Early service: Aide-De-Camp Flanders 1793-1795, Cape of Good Hope 1796 - 1799, West Indies 1800-1804, Assistant Adjutant General on Home Staff 1804-1807, Deputy Adjutant General Hanover 1805, Copenhagen 1807, Deputy Adjutant General on Home Staff 1807-1810, on Home Staff 1810-1812. 

Peninsular War: commanded 7th Division May - September 1812. Invalided home due to ill health 1812.

Other service: On Home Staff 1813-1819.

Knighted 1821. GCH 1820.  Colonel of the 92nd Foot 1820-1823, 72nd Foot 1823-1836
