Cornet 8th Light Dragoons 1793, Lieutenant 83rd Foot 1793, Captain Independent Company 1793,  Captain 96th Foot* 1794, Major 96th Foot* 1794, Major Unattached 1795-1798, Half-pay 1798-1805, Major 56th Foot 1805, Major 5th Dragoon Guards 1805, Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel 1800, Brevet Colonel 1810,  Brigadier General on the Staff 1813, Major General 1813, Lieutenant General 1825, General 1841.

*disbanded 1796.

Early Service: West Indies 1794-1796.

Peninsular War: Assistant Adjutant-General 1810.  Served with his regiment. On staff Lisbon September 1812 - April 1814.
