Alten, Victor Baron (Adolph Viktor Christian Jobst von Alten, 2 November 1755 - 23 August 1820)

Older brother of Major General Charles Baron Alten. Styled Victor Baron Alten only while in British Service.

Entered Hanoverian Army as Ensign 1770, Lieutenant 1774, Captain 1785, Brevet  Major 1794, Major 1799, Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel 4th Cavalry Regiment 1802. Joined British Service in 2nd Light Dragoons* King's German Legion 1803, temporary rank of Brevet Colonel 1804, permanent rank in British Army 1812,  Major General 1810, British half-pay 1816. Major General Hanoverian Service 1815, Lieutenant General Hanoverian Service 1818.

*renamed 2nd Hussars

Early Service: Copenhagen 1807, on Walcheren 1809.

Peninsular War: Commanded cavalry brigade July - ?? 1811, January-July 1812 and September 1812-December 1813. Wounded at Salamanca July 1812.

Other Service: Commanded Cavalry Division KGL The Netherlands 1814-1815. Superintended Hanoverian Cavalry Flanders and France 1815. Commanded 3rd Cavalry Brigade Hanoverian Army 1816-1818.

Colonel of the 2nd Light Dragoons KGL 1804-1816. Colonel of the 2nd Osnabruck Hussar Regiment Hanoverian Army 1816.
