Colville, Charles (7 August 1770 - 27 March 1843)

(also spelt Colvill in army lists)

2nd son of 9th Baron Colville of Culross.  Younger brother of Vice-Admiral  John Colville, 10th Baron Colville of Culross.

Ensign 28th Foot 1781, Lieutenant 28th Foot 1787, Captain Independent Company 1791, Half-pay 1791, Captain 13th Foot 1791, Major 13th Foot 1795, Lieutenant Colonel 13th Foot 1796, Brevet Colonel 1805, Brigadier General on the Staff 1808-1810,  Major General 1810, Lieutenant General Continent 1815, Lieutenant General 1819,  General 1837.

Early service: West Indies 1792-1797 and wounded, Ireland 1798, Mediterranean 1800, Egypt 1801-1802,  Gibraltar 1802-1805, West Indies 1808-1810.

Peninsular War: Commanded brigade 3rd Division October 1810 - December 1811 and May -August 1813. Temporarily commanded: 4th Division December 1811-April 1812, 3rd Division January - May 1813, 6th Division August - October 1813, 3rd Division October 1813- December 1813 and 5th Division December 1813-January 1814. Permanently commanded 5th Division January 1814-April 1814. Temporarily commanded the Corps blockading Bayonne April 1814. Wounded at Badajoz April  1812 and at Vitoria June 1813.

Other service: Commanded 4th Division Flanders and France 1815. Commanded 3rd Division 1815-1817 and 2nd Division 1817-1818 Army of Occupation France. Commander-in-Chief Bombay Presidency 1819-1825. Governor of Mauritius 1828-1832.

KCB 1815. GCB 1815. GCH 1816. Colonel of 5th Garrison Battalion 1812-1815, 94th Foot 1815-1818, 74th Foot 1823-1834, 14th Foot  1834-1835, 5th Foot 1835-1843.
