D'Urban, Benjamin  (1777 - 25 May 1849)

Cornet 2nd Dragoon Guards 1794, Lieutenant 2nd Dragoon Guards 1794, Captain 2nd Dragoon Guards 1794, Captain-Lieutenant 29th Light Dragoons* 1795, Captain 29th Light Dragoons*, Captain 20th Light Dragoons 1797, Major Warwickshire Fencible Cavalry+ 1799, Half-pay 1800, Major 25th Light Dragoons 1801, Major 89th Foot 1802,  Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1805,  Lieutenant-Colonel 9th Garrison Battalion 1806, Lieutenant Colonel 1st West India Regiment 1807, Lieutenant Colonel 2nd West India Regiment 1808, Brevet Colonel 1813, Major General 1819, Lieutenant General 1837.

* renamed 25th Light Dragoons. + disbanded 1800.

Served in Portuguese Service 1809-1816. Promoted Colonel 1809, Brigadier 1811, Major General 1814. 

Early Service: Flanders 1794-1795, West Indies 1796-1797,  Aide De Camp  Home Staff 1799, Aide De Camp West Indies 1799, on staff at Royal Military College 1800-1805, Hanover 1805, Assistant Quartermaster-General Ireland 1807-1808.

Portugal & Spain : Assistant Quartermaster-General Portugal 1808-1809. 

Peninsular War: Quartermaster-General to Portuguese Army 1809-1814. Commanded a cavalry brigade Portuguese Army 1812-1814.

Other Service: Deputy Quartermaster-General to the forces 1816. Lieutenant Governor Antigua 1820-1826 and British Guiana 1824-1831. Lieutenant Governor and Commander-in-Chief Cape of Good Hope 1834-1838 and commanded in 6th Kaffir War 1835. Commander-in-Chief Cape of Good Hope 1838-1846. Commander-in-Chief British North America 1847-1849.  Died in North America 1849.

KCB 1815. GCB 1840.  KCH 1818.

Colonel of  the Royal Staff Corps 1816-1829, 51st Foot 1829-1849.
