The French Navy and the Men Who Commanded It: Vice and Rear Admirals Who Served in the French Navy during the Period 1791 – 1815

At the onset of the French Revolution the French navy underwent changes as did the French army and in 1790 the French navy consisted of the following ships

81 Ships of the line
69 Frigates
141 Sloops

By a series of decrees the navy changed and by 1791 the position had changed forever a decree dated 1st May 1791 the navy compliment was to be

9 Vice Admirals
18 Rear Admirals
180 Captains
800 Lieutenants
200 Ensigns
50 Master Mariners
60 Master Cannonniers
36 Master Shiprights
36 Master Caulkers
18 Master Armourers

The position of Admiral was never implemented and the ranks for admirals were to be Vice Admiral and Rear Admiral In 1793 the following ports had stationed at them

Brest

9  Frigates of 40 cannon
23  Frigates of 32 cannon

Toulon

22 Ships of the line ranging from 74 to 120 cannon
6 Frigates of 40 cannon

After a series of famous battles and engagements and prior to the empire period in 1803 the navy had been reduced to

By the end of the Hundred Days  in 1815 losses incurred by the French navy during a twenty-five year period was

94 - Ships of the line consisting 50 guns and above
187 - Frigates of 26 to 44 guns
220 - smaller vessels consisting 10 guns or more
