Not One in Ten Thousand Know Your Name: the Officers of the British 1st Battalion of Detachments in 1809 -- SourcesBy Robert Burnham and Ron McGuiganAbout the sources: When we first started this project, the intention was to use Lionel S. Challis's Peninsula Roll Call as the basis for the article and fleshing it out with information we found from The Waterloo Roll Call and John Hall's A History of the Peninsular War Volume VIII: the Biographical Dictionary of British Officers Killed and Wounded, 1808 – 1814. A search of the internet made us realized that there was quite of bit of information on these officers and thus this project expanded into a major research effort. Eighty percent of the sources listed below were found on the internet. Many through Google Books. If the copyright date was prior to 1900, virtually every book came from the internet. I would also be remiss in not mentioning the number of family sites that were useful. I was consistantly impressed with the quality and scope of the research of the genealogists. Many were very willing to search their own family archives and databases for information.I would like to point out that since neither Ron nor I live in Europe, neither of us had access to the Public Rcords Office. In a way, this project is also a demonstration of how much information is available if an individual had a decent library and access to the internet. Ackroyd, Marcus.
