Zenge, August Wilhelm Hermann von (63/977)

Born on 11 October 1736 in Ober-Gebra, Kreis Grafschaft Hohenstein, between Wiesbaden and Koblenz, as the son of a retired lieutenant, who was Herr auf Ober-Gebra. On 21 August 1753, he entered Prussian military service as a cadet in Berlin; on 31 May 1756, he was promoted to NCO in the IR von Forcade Nr 23. During the Seven Years War he fought in the battles of Prague (where he was wounded), Rossbach, Leuthen, Zorndorf, Hochkirch, Liegnitz and Torgau, in the clash at Reichenbach and at the sieges of Dresden and Schweidnitz. On 10 December 1757, he was promoted to Frch, and on 21 October 1758, was commissioned as Sklt. On 29 March 1762, he was promoted Prlt; on 6 June 1770, he was promoted to Stkpt, and on 3 July 1773, to Kpt and Kiech in the IR von Rentzell Nr 23. From 1778 – 1779, he served in the war with Austria, and on 8 December 1778, was awarded the PLM for valour in the clash at Jägerndorf, north of Olmütz (now Olomouc). On 5 April 1784, he was promoted to Maj, and on 1 June 1787, was given command of the 1st Bn of his regiment. On 31 January 1788, he took command of the 2nd Bn of the regiment. On 20 May 1791, he was promoted to Obstlt, and on 1 January 1793, was promoted to Obst. From 1794 – 1795, he served in the war in Poland. On 26 September 1795, he was appointed commander of IR von Lichnowski Nr 23. On 5 February 1799, he was appointed Chef of IR von Grünberg Nr 24. On 20 May 1799, he was promoted to GM. In the 1806 campaign, he commanded a brigade in General von Arnim`s 2nd Div  at Auerstädt. He suffered a very bad fall from his horse on 17 October during the retreat. He was placed on half pay in 1807, and retired on 20 January 1813; he died in Berlin on 29 November 1817.
