Goltz, Karl Friedrich Heinrich, Graf von der (1198)

Born on the 8 June 1775 in Berlin. He entered Prussian military service on 1 April 1787, being commissioned as Estandartenjunker, in the regiment of his father (Heinrich Leopold) – HusR Nr 8. On 9 May 1789 he was ennobled. On 3 September 1791 he was promoted to Kornett; he fought in the war against France from 1793 – 1795 in the battle of Kaiserslautern, the clashes at Schwalm, Hasnon, Edesheim, Morsheim and Moorlautern and was repeatedly distinguished. On 19 January 1794 he was awarded the PLM. On 7 September 1795 he was promoted to Sklt and on 24 January 1803 he was promoted to Prlt in the DragR von Wobeser Nr 14. On 23 May 1803 he was promoted Strtmstr and appointed ADC to GL von Blücherwith a salary of Thlr 500 p.a. Blücher was so impressed with von der Goltz that he asked the king to promote him two ranks at once; the king refused. In the war of 1806/7 he fought at Auerstädt and then accompanied Blücher on his march to final captivity at Lübeck. He was exchanged at the end of 1806. On 11 February 1807 he was promoted to Maj; on 3 July 1807 he was appointed ADC to GFM von Kalkreuth. On 21 August 1807 he was appointed ADC to Blücher again. In 1808 he was appointed ADC to Prinz Wilhelm von Preussen. On 4 November 1808 he was permitted to wear the Russian OV IV. On 1 December 1808 his salary was Thlr 900 p.a. On 6 November 1809 he was appointed ambassador to the Bavarian court in Munich with his army pay of Thlr 1,300 and the ambassadorial allowances. He was still an active list officer. On 10 March 1813 he was again appointed ADC to GdK von Blücher at the general`s own request; he acted as Leiter der Kanzlei (Chief of the Chancellory). He fought at Gross-Görschen, the Katzbach, Leipzig, La Rothiere and Laon. On 17 March 1813 he was promoted to Obstlt. On 19 May 1813 he was awarded the EK II for his conduct at Gross-Görschen. On 13 July 1813 he was promoted to Obst. On 29 September 1813 he was awarded the EK I. 8 December 1813 he was promoted to GM. On 1 April 1814 he was appointed commandant of Paris. On 13 April 1814 he was awarded the PLM with oakleaves. He remained in Paris as temporary ambassador and manager of military affairs. On 2 October 1814 he was awarded the Bavarian Max-Joseph Order. In 1815 he was made permanent ambassador to the court in Paris. On 1 July 1816 he was permitted to wear the French  Military Service Order. On 19 August 1817 he was awarded the RAO I. On 30 March 1818 he was promoted to GL. Von der Goltz spoke fluent French and was a friend of Bernadotte`s; despite this, Gneisenau thought well of him. He died on 13 October 1822 in Paris.
