On 22 Nov 1806 he took command of the garrison in Warsaw with orders to hold the city for as long as possible and then to join the Russian General Bennigsen, under whose command he was placed. Russo - Prussian relations were not good. He could hold on for only a few days in Warsaw, as most of the garrison were Poles and desertion was rife. His three infantry regiments were soon reduced to a single battalion. He retired on 4 May 1807 due to sickness and died on 6 February 1819 in Wriezen, northeast of Berlin, near the River Oder.
