Prittwitz und Gaffron, Siegmund Moritz von (1076)

Born on 29 June 1747 in Ober-Pontwitz, Kreis Oels (now Olesnica), in Silesia. His father was Moritz Christian, Herr auf Pontwitz. Siegmund entered Prussian military service in 1762 as an Estandartenjunker in the Kür R von Schabrendorff Nr 1; on 1 December 1764, he was commissioned as Kornett. On 2 December 1772, he was promoted to Lt; served in the war with Austria of 1788 - 1789. On 17 January 1779, he was promoted to Strtmstr, and on 7 September 1780, to Rtmstr and ChEs in the HusR von Rosenbusch Nr 3. On 2 September 1787, he was promoted to Maj in the HusR von Keoszeghy Nr 3, and on 17 June 1790, he was appointed to command the 2. Bn of his regiment. He served in the war against France in 1792 and 1793 at Valmy and the clash at Moncheutain on 15 September 1792. On 24 September 1792, he was awarded the PLM for his actions at Moncheutain. On 20 December 1793, he was appointed to command the Hus R von der Trenck Nr 3, and on 21 January 1795, he was promoted to Obstlt. On 1 June 1798, he was promoted to Obst, and on 20 December 1804, he was appointed Chef of HusR von Suter Nr 5. On 20 May 1805, he was promoted to GM. In the war of 1806/7 he was very distinguished; fighting at Preussisch-Eylau (now Bagrationovsk, in the Russian enclave) and on 8 February 1807, as commander of L`Estocq`s rearguard, he stopped Ney`s pursuit of his corps after that battle. At Heilsberg (now Lidzbark Warminski), on 10 June, he led the DragR von Baczko Nr 7 against a superior force of enemy cavalry and overthrew them. His reconnaisance with his brigade to Schippenbeil and Bartenstein (now Bartoszyyce) was exemplary earning him the king`s praise and the PLM, as well as 1 gold and 32 silver medals for his regiment. On 10 October 1807, von Prittwitz was awarded the RAO. On 7 September 1808, he was appointed Chef of the new 1. Leib-Hus-R. On 1 July 1813, he retired with a pension of Thlr 1,000 p.a. and on 4 August 1813, was promoted to GL; von Prittwitz died on 14 May 1822 in Oels.
