Schäffer, Karl August von (1135)

He was born on 2 March 1745 in Groningen in the Netherlands; his father, Karl, was a captain in Dutch army service. On 17 March 1758, he entered Prussian military service as a cadet in Berlin, and on 9 June 1762, he was appointed Junker in DragR Bayreuth Nr 5. He served in the Seven Years` War from 1762 - `63, and on 3 August 1763, was commissioned as Frch. On 10 October 1765, he was promoted to Sklt. In the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/9 he fought in the clash at Zuckmantel (now Zlata Hory), between Breslau and Olmütz, on the Czech-Polish border, on 14 January 1779. On 7 October 1782, he was promoted to Prlt, and on 20 October 1788, to Stkpt. On 9 January 1791, he was promoted to Maj, and on 9 December 1792, appointed ChEs. He served in the war against France from 1792 – 1795 at Valmy, the clashes of Frankfurt, Hochheim, Türkheim, Weissenburg and Kreuznach, the battles of Kaiserslautern and Moorlautern and the sieges of Verdun, Valenciennes and Landau. On 1 April 1793, he was awarded the PLM for his actions at Türkheim. On 26 May 1799, he was promoted to Obstlt, and on 25 May 1801 to Obst. On 25 August 1806, he was given command of the 2. Bn of his regiment. In the war of 1806/7 he fought at Auerstädt, Zehdenick, Dirschau and in the defence of Danzig. On 28 March 1807, he was appointed to command the DragR Königin Nr 5. On 9 June 1807, he was promoted to GM. He retired on 4 October 1808 on a pension of Thlr 800 p.a. He died on 20 February 1827 in Lippehne, Neumark, now Lipiany, in Poland, east of Schwedt / Oder.
