Eylau: Precis Des Travaux de la Grande Armée
Combat at Eylau
Within a quarter of mile of the small town of Preussich-Eylau, is a plateau that guards the opening onto the plain. The marshal Soult ordered the 46th. and the 18 th. regiments of line to take it. The three regiments that defended it were crushed; but at the same time a Russian column of cavalry charged the end of the left of 18 th., and disordered one of its battalions. The dragoons of Kleins division realized this in time; the troops engaged in the town of Eylau. The enemy had placed in a church and a cemetery several regiments. There he made an obstinate resistance, and after a deadly combat for both sides, the position was taken at ten o’clock in the evening. Legrands division made its bivouacs in front of the city, and Saint-Hilaires division on the right-hand side. The corps of the marshal Augereau was placed on the left, the corps of the marshal Davoust as of the day before had gone to outflank Eylau, and to fall on the left flank of the enemy if it did not change position. The marshal Ney was moving to outflank it on its right side. It is in this position that the night passed.
