Eylau: Precis Des Travaux de la Grande Armée
Letter from Lauderdale, British Pleniportentiary to Paris to Charles Tallyrand, French Foreign Minister: August 11, 1806
No. XVIII. – Sir, it is our duty to reiterate to you the request already twice made for a couriers passport, and at the same time that of the passports necessary for our return in England.
We also believe it our duty to point out to Y. Exc. that these requests were made before yesterday, Saturday, at 6 thirty in the evening; that they were renewed to Y. Exc. yesterday morning, Sunday, at eleven oclock, and that up until now, we did not receive any response to these requests.
When Y. Exc. remembers that it occurred nearly twenty-four hours since we addressed ourselves for the second time to Y. Exc., and that without speaking about our own passports, we saw ourselves deprived in the interval of the means of sending a courier to England, we can only be entirely persuaded that, if we abstain from any remark on a so extraordinary process and also as much and also while it will be possible, all this could cause a sourness and change the nature and the tone of the communications which took place until now between the two Governments.
We request Y.Exc. to agree to approve the insurances of the high consideration with which we are,
LAUDERDALE; YARMOUTH
Paris, 11 August 1806.
