Letter of a Prussian Officer to His Brother on the Destruction of His Regiment: 16 October 1806

De Appenrode, October 16, 1806.

The remainder of the Aschersleben Regiment, at approximately sixty men, was withdrawn from Elbingerode by Wernigerode, as well as the regiment of the Guard-du-Corps.  Our army is completely beaten, not only the corps of the Duke of Brunswick, but also that of General Rüchel.  They claim a Prussian General had betrayed the watchword.  The king has been for a few days very alarmed.  The French artillery did much damage to us.
