4e Corps d’Armée. — Maréchal Soult.

Chef d’état-major;: Général de division Compans.

Detachments, which could have joined in at time convenient to take part in the operations of the December Campaign.

The 10th Light, depot in Schlestadt, had a detachment in the battalion of light infantry, which left Strasbourg on September 28 and crossed at Leipzig on October 24.  This battalion was 650 men strong and included detachments from 6 light regiments2.  A second detachment of 33 men crossed at Mainz on October 6.  Instead of stopping in Mannheim, the boat on which this detachment was went down to Mainz.

The 36th Line, depot with the reserve corps in Boulogne, had a detachment in the first column coming from Boulogne, which crossed the Rhine at Mainz on October 8.  A second detachment of 3 officers and 177 men crossed at Mainz on November 7.

The 43rd, depot with the reserve corps in Boulogne, had in this same column a detachment of 250 men, which crossed at Leipzig on October 22 (report of General Mâcon of October 27).  There is no trace of the arrival of this column in Berlin; however it had to be there between the 26th to the 28th; the second column left Boulogne arriving in Berlin the 30th.  The 43rd received a second detachment of 2 officers and 190 men, which crossed the Rhine at Mainz on November 8.

The 55th, depot with the reserve corps in Boulogne, had in the 2nd column coming from Boulogne and leaving Mainz on October 10, a detachment of 270 men which passed in review for the Emperor on October 31 and awaited in Berlin the arrival of the 4th Corps.  A second detachment of 1 officer and 172 men crossed the Rhine at Mainz on November 8.

The 24th Light, depot in Lauterbourg, had in the battalion of light infantry leaving Strasbourg on September 28 a detachment of 27 men which awaited in Berlin the crossing of the 4th Corps.

The 4th Line in the 2nd battalion of infantry leaving Strasbourg on September 26 a detachment of 200 men had which waited in Berlin the crossing of the 4th Corps.  There were only 174 men present for the review of the Emperor on October 30.

The 28th Line, depot with the reserve corps in Boulogne, had a detachment in the 1st column coming from Boulogne and leaving Mainz on October 8.  A second detachment of 2 officers and 138 men crossed the Rhine at Mainz on November 7.

The 46th, depot with the reserve corps in Boulogne, had in this same column a detachment of 450 men, which crossed at Leipzig on October 24.  A detachment of 2 officers and 151 men crossed the Rhine at Mainz on November 8.

The 57th, depot in Strasbourg, had in the 1st battalion of infantry leaving Strasbourg on September 26 a detachment of 180 men which passed in review for the Emperor at Berlin on October 30 and awaited the arrival of the 4th Corps.

The 8th Hussars, received two mounted detachments at Potsdam, one of 1 officer and 42 hussars left the 8th, the other of 1 officer and 109 hussars left the 14th, awaiting the crossing of the 4th Corps at Frankfurt-on-the Oder.

The 16th Chasseurs did not receive anything.

The 22nd Chasseurs received a mounted detachment of 3 officers and 124 chasseurs, coming from the grand depot of the regiment at Namur, which crossed the Rhine at Mainz on October 28 and joined the 4th Corps for its crossing at Berlin.

The 26th Light, depot in Strasbourg, did not receive a detachment before the crossing of the Vistula.

The 18th Line, depot in Strasbourg, received a detachment of 3 officers and 100 men, which crossed the Rhine at Mainz on November 9.

The 75th, depot with reserve corps in Boulogne, had in the 2nd column coming from Boulogne and leaving from Mainz on October 10 a detachment of 232 men which passed in review for the Emperor in Berlin on October 31 and awaited the arrival of the 4th Corps.  A second detachment of 1 officer and 92 men crossed the Rhine at Mainz on November 8.

The 4th Corps received approximately 1,809 men from October 25 until its departure of Berlin, namely:

1st Div., 725 men; 2nd Div., 857; 3rd Div., 232.

It received moreover approximately 848 men, which had to join by December 20, namely:

1st Div., 367; 2nd Div., 289; 3rd Div., 192.

That is to say a total of 2,657 men who reinforced the army corps.

The depot of the 4th Corps was in Spandau.  Order of the Army of November 4, 1806.

Notes:

1. The 1st battalion of the 57th was detached with the escort for prisoners of war.

2. The 5th elite battalion formed from the companies of carabiniers and voltigeurs of the 3rd battalions of the 10th, 24th and 26th Light; the 6th battalion, from those of grenadiers and voltigeurs of 4th, 18th and 57th Line; these two battalions constituted the 3rd Regiment.  September 17 all these elite companies were with their 3rd battalions at the depot, of the 5th military division.  (Dispatch of the Emperor to General Rapp.)  It is thus quite probable that the majority of them were included in the 4 battalions leaving Strasbourg September the 26 and 28.  The others were started successively with the following detachments.
