British
Cavalry Regimental Depots 1804 – 1812
By Steve Brown
The following
table, extracted from Army Lists and the London Gazette, shows the
known locations of British army regimental depots in the period 1804
to 1812. ‘Depot’
in this instance refers to a regimental post for the marshalling
of officers on leave or reporting for duty, stores, correspondence
and suchlike, rather than a
‘headquarters’ or barracks per se. Many of the depots
below existed whilst one or all battalions of the regiment in question
were on overseas duty (Foreign Service). It
is interesting to note that, whilst the home stations of the vast
majority of British army regiments of the era pay lip service to
their county allegiances, the depot locations do - in many instances
- more or less follow county lines.
Geographical
placenames in this table follow 19th Century county titles and locations,
rather than 21st Century.
