Biographical
Essay (by Digby Smith)
Franz Anton Freiherr von Elsnitz was born on 28 September
1746 in Vienna. On 1 June 1763, he entered Infantry Regiment
N°59 "Daun"
and – the same year – was transferred to the
First Arcieren Life Guard as Oberleutnant. In 1766, he was
transferred to a Cuirassier Regiment, in which, in 1775,
he rose to captain and in 1786, to major. In 1790, he became
Oberstleutnant, and in 1792, Oberst, in the Chevauxleger
Regiment N°18. He fought in the War of the Bavarian Succession
(1778/79) and in the wars against the Turks (1787-1790).
In the autumn of 1789, he took part in the siege of Belgrade.
In 1793, he went with his regiment to Prinz Friedrich Josias
von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld's army in the Austrian Netherlands.
He fought at Neerwinden on 18 March, Caesar's Camp (7 August),
Cysoing (28 August) and at the siege of Dunkirk (24 August-8
September). In 1794, he fought at the siege of Landrecies
(April), Turcoing (May), Tournai (22 May) and in the 2nd
battle of Fleurus on 26 June. In 1795, he and his regiment
fought on the middle and upper Rhine. He was distinguished
in the pursuit of the French after their defeat at Mainz
on 23 October and on 13 November at Tellheim.
On 4 March 1796, he was promoted to Generalmajor. In this
year, he served in Germany under Erzherzog Carl and General
Wartensleben in the Army of the Lower Rhine. He participate
in the battle of Würzburg as commander of a large, mixed
brigade to the north of the battlefield. After Carl's victory
at Würzburg, Elsnitz led the pursuit of the beaten French
and was again distinguished in the clash at Giessen on 16-17
September. In 1799, he was again distinguished at Verona
on 26 and 30 March and at Mantua on 18 May and 7 August.
He had also commanded the Austrians at the defeat of Pastrengo
on 26 March 1799. On 2 October 1799, Elsnitz was promoted
to Feldmarschalleutnant and served in Italy in FML Keim's
division of Kray's army. The brigades of Elsnitz and Gottesheim
were used to work on the defences of Pastrengo since mid-March.
In early 1800 he commanded a division in Vado, northern Italy,
where defeated GdD Louis-Gabriel Suchet at San Giacomo on
he on 12 April. At the end of May he was on the Var River.
He then commanded the cavalry division in FML Hadik's Main
Column at Marengo on 14 June. He retired at the end of 1809
and died on 31 December 1825 in Enzersdorf (Lower Austria).

Biographical
Essay (by Digby Smith)
Johann Karl Eugen Graf zu Erbach-Schönberg was promoted
to Generalmajor in
1783, and Feldmarschalleutant in
1789. In the 1792 campaign, he commanded part of Clerfayt's
corps in Luxemburg. In mid-May, his division was deployed
along the upper Rhine, between Strassburg and Basle. At the
end of the year, he was back in Luxemburg. In 1795 he commanded
the garrison in Düsseldorf and was forced out with the
loss of all his artillery by the French under GdD Jean-Etienne
Championnet on 6 September. He joined forces with the Prinz
von Württemberg, but they were both defeated again at
Uckerath on 13 September. On 4 March 1796 he was promoted
to FZM.
