Biographical
Essay (by Digby Smith)
Franz Jellachich de Buzim was born on 14 April 1746 in
Petrinja, Croatia, southeast of Zagreb. In 1763 he entered
Austrian military service as a cadet in the 1st Banal
Grenz Infantry Regiment. In 1772 he was promoted Captain,
in 1783 to Major. Jellachich fought fought in the wars
against the Turks in Croatia during which he received
his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. He was distinguished
in the campaign in the following year. In 1791 he transferred
to the Ogulin Grenz Infantry Regiment and in 1794 he
became commander of the Sluin Grenz Infantry Regiment.
He then became commander of the newly-raised Croatian
Scharfschützenkorps.
He fought on the upper Rhine between 1793 and 1795 and in
the year 1796 at Templeuve, southeast of Lille (where he
restored order in the confused Austrian ranks and saved the
bridge), Meisenheim, St. Wendel and in the battle of Würzburg.
On 1 March 1797 he was promoted Generalmajor. In the 1799
campaign he commanded a division in the Vorarlberg Corps
of FML Hotze. Later, he was in northern Italy and fought
with the Russians under Suvarov. He defeated the French in
the clash at Feldkirch on 23 March, although heavily outnumbered
and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Maria
Theresian Order.
On 29 October 1800 Jellachich was promoted to Feldmarschalleutnant
and given command of a division in the Defensive Army. In
1802 he was appointed Colonel Proprietor of the Infantry
Regiment N°62. He commanded a division in Innsbruck in
the 1805 campaign. Cut off in Vorarlberg he was forced to
capitulate after heavy fighting, in Dornbirn, on 13/14 November
to Marshal Augereau's VII Corps. He retired after the campaign.
Although regarded as being of "limited skill and initiative",
Jellachich was reactivated in 1809 and commanded a division
in Hiller's VI Corps. Initially he was part of the advance
to Munich. In the subsequent withdrawal he was to act independently,
to protect the mountainous area south of Salzburg and to
maintain communications with the Austrian forces (mainly
the rebellious Tyrolean peasants) in the Tyrol. For this
task he was transferred to the command of Erzherzog Johann's
army in northern Italy. Erzherzog Johann sent Jellachich
an order which the latter took to mean that he was to stay
in the immediate area of Salzburg, which he did from 29 April
to 19 May. On this day he started to withdraw southeast on
Graz from Radstadt, as ordered. He split his command into
two parts and was surprised and heavily defeated by GdD Comte
Paul Grenier from Eugene's Italian army on 25 May at St.
Michael-Leoben. This defeat had serious negative consequences
for the Austrians. Jellachich resigned after the end of the
campaign and died on 4 February 1810 in Hungary.
