Biographical Essay (by Digby Smith)
Joseph Maria Kajetan Freiherr von Ulm zu Erbach was born on
7 August 1751 in Württemberg. On 2 October 1799, he was promoted to Generalmajor.
In early 1800 he commanded an infantry brigade in FML Elsnitz's division in northwestern
Italy. At the end of May, this division was on the River Var. He took part in
the covering force of the siege of Genoa and then commanded an infantry brigade
in FML Vogelsang's division of FML Ott's Left Column at Marengo on 14 June. In
the campaign of 1805 GM Ulm comanded an infantry brigade in Hessen-Homburg's
division in Kolowrat's main body. On 1 September 1807, he was promoted to FML.
Ulm-Erbach retired in 1813 and died on 24 November 1827 in Vienna.
